At times, we will request functional tests to better understand your unique nutritional needs. These are chosen to add useful information to our decision-making process concerning current and future food, food substrates and lifestyle suggestions. A number of clinical and professional laboratories make these tests available to nutritional therapists, and our role is to relate the test results to our clients and find out if there are any specific nutritional deficiencies. The aim is always to help each client achieve an optimal level of wellness through the use of careful and individualised dietary and lifestyle modification that works to maintain metabolic equilibrium (homeostasis).
The functional tests that are used by the Bio Functional Medicine Clinic may include:
Functional Medicine, Nutrition and Naturopathy can identify symptoms such as I.B.S, subclinical thyroid early symptoms (hair loss, poor nail status, mineral defficiencies such as mouth ulcers, infertility, early autoimmune), chronic inflammation, gastrointestinal dysbiosis, vaginal imbalances, vomiting, swallowing, unexplained gain or weight loss, ulcers, Helicobacter pylori, small intestinal overgrowth, parasites, food allergies or food sensitivities.
The mentioned symptoms suggest that you may have a malfunctioning gastrointestinal system, poor immune system or endocrine-related imbalances. This does not leave you alone; Functional medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual.
This could mean a range of things:
You may be suffering from a food intolerance; you may go through havoc with your hormones and weight; you may have contracted a parasite; you may experience acne or eczema flare ups; the levels of good bacteria are suboptimal or you are deficient/insufficient in supportive vitamins and minerals.
Paloma uses a Nutritional Health Framework that recognises that an individual’s state of health is the result of the interaction between his/her genetic inheritance and the factors (such as diet) in his/her environment.
Tests are sometimes paid for or refunded by insurance companies but are mostly the responsibility of the individual.
Nutrition workshops for small groups (6-8 people) are a great opportunity to learn about a nutrition topic that could help to improve your and your family’s health. Topics are numerous and could include a general balanced diet, nutrition for improved energy, managing menopause, juicing, or kids’ nutritional needs. Many more topics are available when considering how nutrition and lifestyle approaches support the health of all of our major body systems.

At BioFunctional Medicine Practice we offer a range of laboratory tests that can ascertain what may be going on within your body from food intolerance testing to measuring your stress, inflammatory, hormonal and digestive levels.
The tests that we use are provided by a range of industry recognised laboratories and may test your blood, saliva, stool and urine depending on the type of test chosen.
Nutrition is coming to the fore as a major modifiable determinant of chronic disease, with scientific evidence increasingly supporting the view that alterations in diet have strong effects, both positive and negative, on health throughout life.
Common symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract and digestive systems are inflammation, bloating, constipation, gastric symptoms such as heartburn, reflux, bad breath, general discomfort, diarrhoea, vomiting, swallowing, unexplained gain or weight loss, ulcers, Helicobacter pylori, small intestinal overgrowth, parasites, food allergies or food sensitivities.
